I think Liavan would do well to try to get some more of Warden Nierd's time, given how useful he's been with identifying things so far. Or, possibly, the equivalent person in the duke's service, as a cliff is sometimes a species boundary. (Even if there are descendants of the manor caretakers in the area, the condition of the manor suggests that they are likely to have no better idea than anyone else what the various plants are.)

I see our Scottish-sounding foreigner has hints of being an elf. Intriguing. And he can see magic, and what he sees intimidates him. Curiouser and curiouser...

If he does manage to track the deer back to others, he's still going to have a hard time getting one or more to come with him. Taking a calf (fawn, foal, whatever) will definitely draw the ire of at least the mother. And if they form herds — unlike moose — then the whole herd may raise the objection.
