Things That Are Needful

This follows on from "What Happens Next" which can be found here on Patreon, here on Dreamwidth, or here on Livjournal.  It continues to be inspired by Ursula Vernon's Paladin rant and to be dedicated to The Militant Order of St Wombus (surely copyright Ursula Vernon).  If you need to take spoons or time into consideration, it runs to 3,125 words.  [These things are getting longer, yes.]


 

Acorn Elmsfather had been to Ailstbridge before.  It was the only place you could cross the Uldar for at least a day’s travel in either direction, so the road through the village was heavily used by merchants, pilgrims, and anyone else who had business that needed them to travel between Brevanbarrow and Duvchester.  For all of that, it wasn’t a big place.  It had a blacksmith, a wheelwright, and two inns, but they were for the passing trade.  The families in the village worked in those four businesses or supported them with wood, food, herblore, and the benefits of extended family.  He had admired the inn and cottage gardens on several occasions, because he was a servant of the god of gardens and that was one of the things that he did.

Slinderin Elmsfather had studied, prayed, held vigil, practised, and studied some more.  He’d been examined by his teachers and their masters to what felt like within an inch of his life, and finally, he was being presented to his god for approval and acceptance.  He knelt at the prayer rail in front of the altar, and said all the proper words he’d been taught for this occasion, but in his mind all he thought was, “Please, take me.”
