I don't think I'd read this 'verse up until now. Catching up on "Between Eighteen and Nineteen" and it's spin-off stories was fun reading. The phrase "independent autonomous aspect" now has me wondering exactly how many people have the divine spark from each deity. I'm also curious about the mechanics of how the autonomy works, though clearly there's communication with the parent deity. Godlike powers can get weird...

Ordinarily, I'd look at "voices in your head" as a reason to start psychiatric treatment, particularly after eating something poisonous. But the voice being cogent, not demanding crazy things, and being part of a culturally- and family-accepted event — being the Bearer — perhaps it's not so weird to her.

I suspect Elaine doesn't have any idea what she's getting into. She's surprisingly willing to go along with this, though. Then again, with the whole family saying she's owed a trip, perhaps she feels like she's owed one too, and this is just a way of getting that trip.

I look forward to seeing how the rest of this plays out. Hello, Elaine!
